Got gastroenteritis? You might have caught Campylobacteriosis.
According to World Health Organization, Campylobacter spp. is one of four key global causes of diarrhoeal diseases. It is considered to be the most common bacterial cause of human gastroenteritis in the world. Campylobacteriosis, commonly caused by Campylobacter jejuni, is an infectious disease that includes symptoms like diarrhea, cramps, abdominal pain, fever, and vomiting. It can also cause life threatening infection such as Guillain-Barre syndrome, reactive arthritis, and irritable bowel syndrome. Campylobacteriosis usually occurs two to five days after ingestion of contaminated raw milk, untreated water, raw and undercooked meat, poultry, and shellfish. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Campylobacteriosis is estimated to affect over 1.3 million people every year.
