Your Trusted Partner and Expert in Mycotoxin Analysis

Mycotoxins are metabolites produced by certain molds that contaminate various agricultural commodities pre- or post-harvest. Commodities with a higher risk of mycotoxin contamination are corn, wheat, barley, sorghum, soybeans, groundnuts, oilseeds, milk, and feeds, among others. Mycotoxins are capable of causing cancer and other adverse health concerns to exposed humans and animals when present even in small amounts. Because of the severity of the effects on consumers and the consequent need to comply with legislative standards, mycotoxin diagnostic test kits are continuously being validated for different commodities to cater to the requirements of concerned industries.

The following are the major groups of mycotoxins that are strictly regulated by the US FDA and EU legislative limits: aflatoxin, ochratoxin, T-2/HT-2 toxins, fumonisin, zearalenone, and vomitoxin (DON).

Aflatoxin is one of the most potent natural carcinogens known to man and has been linked to a wide variety of human health problems. The US FDA and EU have established maximum allowable levels of total aflatoxin in food commodities at 20 ppb and 4 ppb, respectively. The maximum level for aflatoxin M1 in milk products is even lower at 0.5 ppb. Primarily, Aspergillus species produce aflatoxin.

  • Aflatoxin B1 and naturally occurring mixtures of aflatoxin are identified as potent human carcinogens
  • May cause liver damage or cancer, decreased milk and egg production, immune suppression, and interference with reproductive efficiency

Ochratoxin is primarily produced by species of Penicillium and Aspergillus. It is commonly found in coffee, barley, wheat, corn, and other commodities. Ochratoxin may be present in conjunction with aflatoxin. The European Union (EU) has set the limit for the presence of this mycotoxin in human food from 0.5 to 10 ppb depending on the commodity.

  • Kidney damage or nephropathy
  • Reduction in growth and feed efficiency
  • Increased mortality

T-2 Toxin is a tricothecene produced by species of Fusarium and is one of the more deadly toxins. Its hydrolyzed form (HT-2) is proven to have the same effects.

  • If ingested in sufficient quantity, can severely damage the entire gastrointestinal tract and cause rapid death due to internal hemorrhage
  • Visible lesions can be observed in the oral cavity of avian species
  • Implicated in the human diseases alimentary toxic aleukia and pulmonary hemosiderosis
  • Damage caused is often permanent

Fumonisin is a toxin associated with species of Fusarium. It is commonly found in corn and corn-based products, as well as rice. US FDA and the European Union (EU) established an acceptable limit of 2 ppm for dry milled corn products.

  • Linked to esophageal cancer in humans
  • Associated with pulmonary edema in pigs
  • Causes equine leukoencephalomalacia (liquefaction of the brain)

Zearalenone is also a mycotoxin produced by Fusarium spp. molds. Zearalenone is similar in chemical structure to the female sex hormone estrogen and targets the reproductive organs. The US FDA has regulatory levels for this mycotoxin at less than 500 ppb, while for the European Union (EU), a range between 20 and 200 ppb is accepted depending on the type of commodity.

  • Causes estrogenic effects to pigs when ingested
  • Causes swollen vulvas, vaginal or rectal prolapses in pre-pubertal gilts
  • Causes enlarged uterus, swollen or twisted uterus, and shrunken ovaries in sows
  • Causes testes atrophy, enlarged mammary glands, and decreased fertility in boars

Deoxynivalenol (DON), also known as Vomitoxin, is a tricothecene produced by several species of Fusarium. The US FDA recommends that the maximum level for human consumption is at 1 ppm. For the European Union (EU), the regulatory level is between 0.20 and 1.25 ppm .

  • Associated with outbreaks of acute gastrointestinal illness in humans
  • Reduction in feed consumption and weight gain are inversely proportional to concentration of DON
  • High concentrations cause feed refusal and vomiting
