Php70 per 1 kilo of rice? Ironic as it may seem in a country with plenty of arable land, such is the incident in Zamboanga City wherein the local government has declared a state of calamity in response to the ongoing rice crisis. Starving millions of Filipinos especially those below the poverty line, this further incited the need for better food security actions.
The World Food Programme (WFP) said that people are considered food secure when they have access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life; however, because of population growth, changing tastes, climate change, water scarcity, and troubled farmers, food security remains an issue especially for the Philippines.
Thankfully, government actions are now in place to make rice available and reasonably priced for all. However, a long term solution to address the Philippine food security concerns is to focus on agricultural programs targeting increased productivity and sustainability to cope with increasing annual demand. Still, the rice crisis this year should serve as a wake-up call for our country to step up in securing food for all Filipinos.
On your next food trip, think twice about that extra rice. Eat only what you can.
