Happy Food Safety Awareness Week, Fellow Food Safety Ambassadors!
Celebrated every last week of October in the Philippines, this week is dedicated to raising awareness
about the importance of safe food practices to protect our health and well-being. Remember the five
keys to safer food and protect your loved ones from foodborne illnesses:
• Keep Clean: Regularly wash hands, kitchen surfaces, and food produce thoroughly to
prevent the spread of bacteria that cause foodborne illnesses.
• Separate Raw from Cooked Food: Separate raw food from other food and use separate
equipment and utensils for handling raw food to avoid cross-contamination.
• Cook Thoroughly: To eliminate harmful bacteria, make sure to cook poultry, eggs, and
seafood thoroughly at the proper temperature.
• Keep Food at Safe Temperature: To avoid bacteria multiplying, refrigerate perishable food
for not less than 2 hours.
• Use safe water and raw materials: Using safe water and selecting fresh or properly
processed foods, and continuing through thorough washing of raw produce and strict
adherence to food expiration dates.
Put in mind these five keys to safer food — Keep Clean, Separate Raw from Cooked Food, Cook
Thoroughly, Keep Food at Safe Temperature, and Use safe water and raw materials — to build a
strong foundation for food safety and help ensure that every meal we prepare is as safe as it is
enjoyable.
