Veterinary drugs such as antibiotics are commonly used in food-producing animals to treat infections, prevent disease, or for growth promotion. Doses of antibiotics are either administered directly to the animal or added to the feed or drinking water of cows, pigs, chickens, fish, and other food-producing animals. By doing so, antibiotics can accumulate in the tissues of the animal and animal by-products such as milk or eggs, which may be transferred to humans once consumed since it cannot be destroyed by heat or other usual processing methods.
Effects of veterinary drug residues range from difficulty in breathing, allergic reactions, vulnerability to disease, cardiac problems, cancer, and other health risks.
